2020 Online JCI Asia Pacific Conference Awards Ceremony Highlights Achievements of Award-Winning Members and Organizations

As with many events this year, it became clear to the organizers that the 2020 JCI Asia-Pacific Conference could not take place in person, and they would have to pivot. Their persistence and patience through difficult circumstances led to the third successful online JCI Area Conference we have seen in 2020.

With the support of the Asia Pacific Board of Directors and the Asia Pacific Development Council, the 2020 Online JCI Asia Pacific Conference Assembly was held on 18 July, followed by the Awards Ceremony on 19 July. Thousands of people tuned in on Facebook live to watch outstanding members and organizations receive recognition for the fantastic work they’ve done this past year.

Most Outstanding New Member
Peggy Teh Pei Yi
JCI United Penang, Malaysia

Joining JCI United Penang at the end of 2017, Peggy Teh Pei Yi has been an active member and highly engaged in her short tenure. Since joining, Peggy has been an organizing chairperson or committee member for 30 projects. Some of these commitments include Chinese New Year Charity Luncheon, E-Awards Workshop Treasurer, World Clean Up Day and recently serving as the Financial Freedom Mindset Chairperson. Her active collaboration with fellow JCI members and her dedication to being a leader in different ways has led to her being awarded the Most Inspiring Member award for 9 consecutive months. Her enthusiasm for environmental issues, public awareness and community outreach makes her a great testament to JCI values.

Carol Yeung
JCI Hong Kong Jayceettes, Hong Kong

Taking on the great responsibility of becoming the chairperson for JCI Hong Kong’s Ten Outstanding Young Persons Selection (TOYP), Carol Yeung has served the team with passion and dedication over the past 9 years of membership. Known for her incredible project management skills, Carol has been a leader on many projects at both the local and national level. Carol believes in coaching young members to see the JCI value of “learning by doing” and giving to others in order to gain. Her fellow JCI members describe her as a hard worker, ready to roll-up her sleeves to perform a task and praise her patience to work hand-in-hand with members. Carol commits herself to inspire others as she is grateful for her opportunities and lives the JCI value and mission everyday in her work as a chairperson, leader, active citizen and friend.

Gary Lee
JCI City, Hong Kong

Local President Gary Lee, known by his members as the warm-hearted person, embodies what it means to be a strong and compassionate leader. He led his chapter, JCI City, with heart, commitment and a willingness to serve his fellow man. Described by his local organization as humble, encouraging, responsive and trustworthy, his work on projects like Love Ever After, Junior Dragon Ambassador Election and the 23rd Innovative Entrepreneur Awards Program. Supporting his members everyday to be their best, Gary Lee shows what it means to be a JCI leader, helping to lead by example everyday.

Most Outstanding New Local Organization
JCI George Town
JCI Malaysia

Eager to be a local organization that strives to support local community and enterprise, JCI George Town has been helping create impactful and sustainable CSR programs through NGO partnerships. Using their plan of action, JCI members helped with recruitment strategies by using social media, creating the flagship project “Spreading Love Through Education,” enacting team building activities and even conducting surveys to see the needs of their members and how they should improve. Overall, the organization has already hosted 34 training courses, onboarded 10 new members who became trainors and helped over 200 people with a self enrichment program. Members of JCI George Town are working hard to create a lasting legacy as an empowered and sustainable local organization.

JCI Nagoya
JCI Japan

Using the JCI Strategy and Action Plan, JCI Nagoya helps members become leaders and active members of the community. Standing at 1,000 members strong, this organization has worked hard to build a legacy with partnerships with local chambers of commerce, civic groups, administrative organizations and governmental leaders. Additionally, JCI Nagoya works to raise awareness through local TV stations, newspapers, social media and text campaigns. Focusing on international relations, JCI Nagoya and JCI Manila have created a project to educate children on football, as well as a project focused on developing human resources to solve social issues in each other's countries. With a focus on improving not only the community, but also their own organization, members of JCI Nagoya should be proud of the work they are doing to further the JCI mission everyday.

Best Inter-Organization Collaboration Project
Restore Vitality After Recovery From Disaster 44684
JCI Kure, Japan

In July, 2018 heavy rains caused great damage and disaster in Kure. Members in the area worked hard to begin this project as a long-term way to offer recovery, restore vitality and bring resilience to the community following the disaster. During the rains, more than 2,000 houses were damaged, and homes were without water or flooded. Over the course of this project, members of JCI Kure set up the Kure Disaster Volunteer Center that later led to another five sub volunteer centers and over 39,000 volunteers. They also established events to bring joy and restore vitality to those impacted, things like summer festivals and even a dance event. Hoping to bring the values of resilience to the disaster, JCI Kure was able to sign an agreement with Kure City and the social welfare council to offer real support during this time. A project that truly shows that service to humanity is the best work of life.

Best Local Peace Project
Buddy Not Bully
JCI Lion Rock, Hong Kong

Noticing a need for more anti-bullying campaigns in their community, members of JCI Lion Rock took action to ensure students understand the lasting repercussions and have education to prevent bullying in the future. The extensive reach of this project is thanks to the many events and outreach activities organized by JCI members with their community. One event, the Buddy Not Bully Catwalk Show had over 200 participants and was an opportunity for children to join the fashion show promoting peach, mutual support and care! Together with other NGOs and even a few celebrities, this project was featured in 22 media and news reports and even led to 3 new members. A great testament to promoting peace in the community while ensuring good education and a safe environment for all youth.

Best Local Community Empowerment Program
Thank You Teacher
JCI Tokyo, Japan

Members of JCI Tokyo, noticing a need for more teacher recognition in their community, developed the program “Thank You Teacher” to honor teachers who go above and beyond for their students in the classroom. As the burden of education has shifted away from homeschooling and parents to more traditional classroom learning, many members in JCI Tokyo felt it important to raise awareness about “Teachers Day” and the immense amount of work educators take on to ensure quality education for all. Many smaller projects are involved in the overall program, for example members organized a panel discussion, video broadcast, gratitude exhibit and even a texting campaign to raise awareness. By empowering the community to support teachers, members are helping to support quality education for all.

Best Local Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Program
One Community project “One Moment of Patience" Campaign against assault crime
JCI Capital, Mongolia

Members of JCI Capital were alarmed to learn that the assault crime rate in Mongolia was the highest it has ever been recently at 30% from all total crimes. This startling reality led members to create a project that addressed a common concern- young people under the influence of alcohol making the wrong choices. In collaboration with the Mongolian Police Authority, they started the campaign “One Minute of Patience” which teaches young people through events, seminars and social media awareness campaigns. The project had incredible success, helping to achieve a 20 percent decrease in the assault rate and impacting a wave of reforms by gaining the sponsorship of top companies in Mongolia who plan to increase their corporate social responsibility with this program.

Best Local Global Goals Project
JCI Davao: Life is Here 44042
JCI Davao, Inc., Philippines

Setting an ambitious goal to protect life in all its levels, members of JCI Davao set out on a mission to create an environmental program that supports the local global goals through the preservation and protection of sea turtles and their environment. Through this pilot program, JCI Davao members were treated to an experience about LIFE, standing for: “Looking for Inner Fulfillment by saving our Environment''. This program teaches members how to sustainably manage and protect marine and coastal ecosystems and involved more than 150 young active citizens from JCI, MOHSG52 and Navy volunteers. Creating new partnerships and focusing on the global goals, this project is a wonderful example of taking action at the local level to inspire change around the world.

CITY Aligned: The Elevation of Brotherhood
JCI City, Hong Kong

Members of JCI City set out to accomplish some impressive goals in their own chapter, hoping to align their organization through toolsets, mindsets and skill sets. They created this vision by organizing a new system of membership, promoting events and activities with a scoring system, hosting social functions and encouraging punctual payment of membership dues.  By using this new recruitment system, they were able to bring on new members using recruitment guidelines, following an action plan and inviting potential new members to some events. One powerful program that helped elevate their organization was the creation of C.O.A.C.H which stands for care, organize, active, creative, harmony, a mentoring and skillset program for members. This program helped onboard 40 new members, a wonderful testament to the sustainability of this program.

Dragon Apprentice 2019
JCI Dragon, Hong Kong

Hoping to encourage young people to reach personal fulfillment, Dragon Apprentice is an annual student award program organized by JCI Dragon to provide students with a platform of life planning, that helps to enhance their understanding of commercial society and positive inspiration. 35 chosen students were selected from a great pool of candidates and these students joined seven different teams. The program hosted three training workshops, business visits, mentorships and a judging day along with a graduation ceremony. This year’s program focused on entrepreneurship opportunities and allowed students to learn real world skills that will help them become future leaders in the community.

Life Matters
JCI Central, Mongolia

In an effort to progress the SDG’s and implement the 3 Steps Against Cancer from the World Health Organization, members in JCI Central created a project to address early diagnosis of cancer in Mongolia. Because of inadequate public awareness of cancer in Mongolia, many parents can misinterpret the common symptoms of childhood cancer as well lack of proper health systems and access in rural areas. This long-term project has had incredible milestones like collaborating with the Mongolian Government, constructing the “House of Hope” for palliative cancer care and even providing support for patients during the COVID-19 crisis this year. With the help of over 21 partners, each year JCI Central has raised awareness, supported education and initiatives and celebrated 20 cancer-free heroes!
