1984 JCI President Joe Murphy Passes Away
It is with great sadness that JCI announces the death of former JCI President Joe Murphy on July 13, 2016.
A member and JCI Senator of JCI Ireland, 1984 JCI President Murphy died at the age of 68. Murphy was born on December 4, 1947 in Ballina Co. Mayo, Ireland.
Murphy made a number of significant contributions to JCI during his time as a JCI member. Prior to his role as JCI President he held several international offices including JCI Vice President, JCI General Legal Counsel and JCI Executive Vice President. Elected as 1984 JCI President, he chaired the JCI World Congress that year in Montreal, Canada.
Under his leadership as JCI President, JCI was present in 55 countries and was flourishing with more than 500,000 members worldwide.
"Joe Murphy made a lasting impact on all those he met and brought great pride to his home nation as the first member of JCI Ireland to serve as JCI President. Today we pay tribute to Joe and stand steadfast in our commitment to continue his legacy by providing young leaders with development opportunities to create positive change," said Brian J Smyth, 2016 JCI Ireland National President.
