Purpose

To develop the communication skills of the youngsters of Residence La Chaux, Mauritius and improve their interpersonal skills with the end objective to improve their chances to being employed in the future and act as the leaders in that region.

Overview

Residence La Chaux was seriously impacted by the Wakashio Oil Spill. Our needs analysis with community leaders showed us that whilst adults benefitted from governmental programmes, the youth needed up-skilling to thrive. They needed help with communication skills. We therefore devised a series of training to improve their communications skills, such as a mock interview and a theatre training.

Results

The communication skills of the participants improved greatly and we saw them become more confident. We were also able to build a bond with them and this will help them to increase the brotherhood between the JCI organisation with future young leaders of that region.

Recommendations

To provide opportunities, such as internships, whereby their will be able to put their skills into practice and sustain the communication skills training on a regular basis.
