Purpose

Kestävä Kainuu (Sustainable Kainuu) is a project organized for the first time by Junior Chamber International of Kajaani. Project aims to bring environmental actions and sustainable development into the everyday life for people who live in Kainuu region. With the Kestävä Kainuu (Sustainable Kainuu) we want to inspire local companies, associations and communities to join to work for Sustainable Development Goals.

The project started with Kestävä Kainuu -challenge in April and it culminated to European Sustainable Development Week in September when JCI Kajaani arranged a series of free and open events with our partners.

There was totally 11 SDG goals included to this project.

Targets of the Sustainable Kainuu project:
• Influencing and educating society in Kainuu and elsewhere in Finland,
• Presentation of low threshold solutions to Kainuu residents and local entrepreneurs and
other actors,
• Raising awareness of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and how everyone
we can easily help us achieve our goals in our daily lives,
• Education about sustainability for children and young people through age-appropriate tasks,
• Experimental culture,
• As well as making known local actors who do work that fits the theme of the week

Overview

OFFICIAL GOALS - The project brought new members and partners to the Kajaani Youth Chamber of Commerce
and strengthened existing partnerships. In addition, the project was so financially successful that
that we can ensure continuity in the years to come.

OBJECTIVES OF INDIVIDUAL DEVELOPMENT - At the heart of chamber activities is individual development and therefore the project already
itself encouraged project team members to jump outside the comfort zone and learn
something new. The members of the project team got to learn about marketing and
communications, graphic design, sales and partner acquisition, use of the Wordpress platform, video filming and editing, project management, scheduling and management. The rest of our membership got to learn about sustainability through events and lectures
through. The project succeeded excellently in the goal of developing both the team members and the project team
our membership.

OTHER OBJECTIVES - We wanted to enable project continuity and reproducibility, so documentation was done carefully throughout the project. Project management the aim was to carry out the project as professionally as possible with voluntary resources: notes, to-do lists and schedules were maintained during the period. In addition to the above
and with the help of our goal was to make the project easily scalable and allow for its variation as well in your own chamber and possibly in other chambers in the future. We feel that all the goals we set were met.

ACTIVATING OUR CHAMBER

15 members of JCI Kajaani participated in the implementation of the project, which is over 50% of our members.

PARTNERS

The project reached a large number of partners: the project gained a lot of positive visibility among local businesses and the acquisition of partners was relatively streamlined - some of the partners contacted us before we even get the chance to contact them.

The main partner from the beginning of the project was the city of Kajaani. There was a clear demand and need for the project: the reception of the project from local companies and our existing stakeholders was very positive and enthusiastic. The project has aroused a lot of interest locally in Kainuu.

SUSTAINABLE KAINUU CHALLENGES

A SUSTAINABLE KAINUU CHALLENGE FOR COMPANIES

We challenged Kainuu residents, ie. local companies, communities and associations, to participate in sustainable development to help with a sake campaign in April. They were able to take part in the challenge on a very low threshold: we encouraged them to share the picture or posting on social media with the #KestäväKainuu hash tag. The spring challenge didn't get so many participants, but the visibility of the project increased.

READING CHALLENGE

During the project, we also implemented the sustainable development reading challenge in cooperation with Kajaani's city library. We challenged people to read by a certain deadline five books related to UN sustainability development goals. Those who have read all five books are able to participate in the raffle either by using the online form or by filling in the lottery ticket at the Kajaani Main Library. Together with the Kajaani Main Library, we made a list of reading tips so it would be possible to find suitable books at the lowest possible level for anyone interested. In addition, there was an exhibition table in Kajaani's main library with instructions for the reading challenge as well as related books. Kajaani's main library will also share reading tips on its own social media channels until the end of the year. The reading tips were compiled on the Kestävä Kainuu website so that as many people as possible could view them. The reading challenge runs until the beginning of January, so we do not know the number of participants yet.

RESTAURANT CHALLENGE

At the end of August, we challenged local restaurants to join the restaurant challenge. We asked restaurants to show off vegetarian and vegan diets at lunch tables and breakfast buffets during the Sustainable Kainuu week. Two Kajaani's restaurants took part in the challenge. Restaurants participating in the challenge were listed on the project website and advertised at the JCI Kajaani's social media channels during the Sustainable Kainuu week.

WEEK FULL OF EVENTS

The project started with Kestävä Kainuu -challenge in April and it culminated to European Sustainable Development Week in September (20.-26.9.2021) when JCI Kajaani arranged a series of free and open events with our partners. There was 22 events with more than 200 participants. All the trainings were recorded and most of them will be added to JCI Kajaani's Youtube channel so people can watch them afterwards.

Results

The project reached a large number of partners: the project gained a lot of positive visibility among local businesses and the acquisition of partners was relatively streamlined - some of the partners contacted us before we even get the chance to contact them.

The main partner from the beginning of the project was the city of Kajaani. There was a clear demand and need for the project: the reception of the project from local actors and our existing stakeholders was very positive and enthusiastic. We got plenty of new partners and even received 10 000 euros donation from one of them to this project. This really tells that there was a need to this kind of project.

Recommendations

This was a great project with quite simple idea behind of it. It gathered a lot of our members to arrange it and we also got couple new members during the process. Summary: we activate our members, we got new members and partners, we made a positive affect to our society and made SDGs more visible.
