JCI Southampton Good Heart Project in collaboration with JCI UK
From January 1 to April 23, 2017
Sustainable Development Goal
Good Health and Well-Being
Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the United Kingdom. Over 160,000 people die each year of heart-related diseases. According to Wessex Heartbeat our charity of the year, heart disease is the UK's biggest killer - accounting for 39% of all deaths. According to the British Heart Foundation, someone is struck by a heart attack every 3 minutes and 30% of all heart attacks are fatal. JCI UK members voted to choose SDG #1 and #3 as the SDGs to focus on – JCI Southampton decided to choose their charity of the year as one working towards tackling one of those SDGs to increase impact. JCI Southampton decided to support Wessex Heartbeat, a local charity that provides support to the babies, children, adults and their loved ones treated at the Wessex Cardiac Centre at Southampton General Hospital
The first action was to run a 10K at the Southampton ABP race taking place in April 2017 to not only raise money for our charity but also support our corporate partner ReesLeisure who were organising the event. We linked this activity with JCI UK Good Heart Project and secured free places for their South members to take part in the race too. Members from Southampton, London and Greenwich took part in the race
5 members from Southampton took part in the run and several members came to support on the day.

Members from London, Greenwich and Birmingham came down to Southampton to support the event and promote the national Good Heart Project
All corporate partners of JCI Southampton were involved in the project, from running the event and securing free places for JCI members to supporting runners or running the race.
£405.00 were raised for Wessex Heartbeat with that race .
JCI Southampton needs to provide more opportunities to members to develop an active lifestyle. A cycling event and a walk for charity are two events being supported by JCI Southampton to maintain the efforts and raise awareness of Wessex Heartbeat
