Purpose

Adaptation of a tree planting culture and combating climate change to raise community awareness about conservation and management of natural resources.

Overview

Over the past decade, there has been a drastic change in climatic patterns, increased temperatures, a 50% rise in severity of droughts and floods. Forestry and Agro-forestry are the most natural and effective ways of controlling climate change. Trees reduce the Carbon footprint. A mature tree consumes upto 48 pounds of Carbon Dioxide a year. Trees prevent soil erosion by slowing down and absorbing the rain water. Also with the constantly rising temperatures and new heat records being set every coming year, trees cool the earth through evaporation. Therefore the trees are much cheaper compared to other methods of climate change mitigation.

Results

-Managed to plant 50 fruit trees successfully.
-Established a fruit Orchard at St Mathias Primary School
-Managed to inspire school children to plant trees and some were given fruit trees to plant at home.
-Sensitized the school children and the community on the importance and benefits of tree planting especially combating climate change.

Recommendations

-To engage more schools and establishing orchards.
-Monitoring growth and stewardship of the planted trees.
