Purpose

This project was designed to enlighten all road users on the importance of road safety as well as the do’s and don’ts necessary to drive safely.
Its aim was to facilitate knowledge and inspire TRUCK DRIVERS to adhere to driving behaviors that will minimize the occurrence of accidents.


Overview

A road safety awareness project was carried out on Wednesday the 12th of December 2018 and on the 14th of December 2018. This was done through the use of a radio talk show on the former date and a training session at the later date.
This project was designed to enlighten all road users on the importance of road safety as well as the do’s and don’ts necessary to drive safely.
Its aim was to facilitate knowledge and inspire TRUCK DRIVERS to adhere to driving behaviors that will minimize the occurrence of accidents.
The following actions were taken to ensure the success of this project;
3 sequential visits were made to Matrix depot at Ifiekpo, where meetings were held with members of the safety and security unit. Also, drivers were consulted as stake holders in this project through the Petrol Tanker Drivers Association (PTD).
Conditions and attitudes that lead to accidents in the petrol haulage industry were thus identified.
Consequently, awareness was designed to focus mainly on TANKER DRIVERS with two trainings.

The project was captured in three different newspapers: vanguard newspaper, fresh angle newspaper and the sun newspaper.

The root cause: Increase in death rate due to road accidents by tanker drivers.


Results

IMPACT
1. Reduced accidents due to bad driving habits.
2. Members and delegates learnt practical skills on fault identification.
3. Increased safety awareness amongst road users
4, Improved the health of Tanker drivers.
5. Increase in the JCI Brand awareness
6. Encouraged partners to carry out community projects.
7. Equip new JCI Members with the skills and knowledge of executing sustainable need based projects
8. The HSE Manager of Matrix Energy confirmed that the accidents and death rate has reduced since this project was carried out and the drivers are more disciplined/careful.


Recommendations

The radio talk show on safety should be held more frequently.
This project should be adopted by all JCI local organizations as road accident is common to all communities.
The project should be held at least twice a year.
