The 2015 JCI European Conference Encouraged Collaboration through Connection

Over 1200 delegates from 51 countries gathered in Istanbul, Turkey, June 3–6 to collaborate to create sustainable impact. 

The 2015 JCI European Conference week started with the JCI National Presidents meeting, where the European National Presidents reported on projects being conducted for the remainder of the centennial year as well as shared ideas for collaborative change. The First Timers Orientation took place on the first day as well, hosting over 100 enthusiastic first time attendees of JCI events. The Opening Ceremony successfully concluded the first day with entertainment from JCI Culture, a JCI Local Organization from Istanbul, with professional dancers that performed several cultural dances. 


The following day kicked off with the JCI Morning Show, where the hosts motivated the delegates for the week ahead. During the show, 2013 Executive Vice President, Lesley Young, gave one of the very first JCI Impact Talks to the eager audience. The talks seek to inspire and engage audiences of young active citizens on how they too can make an impact in the lives of others. JCI Impact Talks are available to view and post on the JCI YouTube Channel. This years conference also debuted the first European Regional Partnership Summit, which focused on understanding the challenges of youth unemployment in 21st-century Europe. The summit aimed to connect with active citizens and leaders from the local community and across the region to explore how the coordinated efforts of all sectors of society can economically empower youth. The event was a success and included an incredible keynote by special guest Galya Frayman Molinas, President, Turkey, Caucasus & Central Asia Business Unit, The Coca-Cola Company. 


The JCI Peace, Prosperity and Sustainability Forum was held on the third day of the conference and explored the newly expanded third stage of community development in the JCI Active Citizen Framework of “Peace, Prosperity and Sustainability” and how advancing this stage is an integral part of achieving JCI’s goal to build permanent and everlasting world peace. The forum included a panel discussion with panelists Bar???? Ka??ka, Founder of Kaska International Law firm, Osman Parlak, Director of Index and Data Department at BISR/Borsa Istanbul and Halide Caylan, Head of Office of the Resident Coordinator, UN Coordination Specialist, UN House Turkey. Panelists shared best practices with the audience on the importance of community development with a focus on peace, prosperity and sustainability. Other well-attended conference events included the International CSR Panel Discussion that was attended by companies from various countries as well as the Keynote: Women Empowerment, which had great attendance and was well received by the audience. 


The final day of the conference included the iSmile and Run, a campaign to support JCI Operation Hope. The run was combined with a Nike 5k run in Istanbul and had several thousand participants from all over Turkey. The final evening, delegates attended the Awards Ceremony to celebrate the great achievements of JCI Organizations throughout Europe. JCI Culture entertained as they showcased the history of JCI through interpretive dances, ending with a final performance of “Time to Celebrate;” this dance featured delegates who had also learned the dance during the conference. The concluding event of the week was the highly anticipated Farewell Ball, where attendees celebrated the end of a great conference week while also celebrating 100 years of impact.  


Delegates left Istanbul feeling refreshed by experiencing the variety of new programming, the innovative ideas fostered and exchanged and by partnerships made throughout the conference.
